SIL receives SBIR Phase II by Missile Defense Agency for VBIRS Space Based Range technology

Space Information Laboratories received a Missile Defense Agency SBIR Phase II award (approximately $2.05 million) to advance its Vehicle Based Independent Range System (VBIRS) Space Based Range technology.

VBIRS transmits high-speed, full-duplex telemetry (20–200 Mbps) through LEO Ka-band satellites from rockets, missiles, interceptors, hypersonic vehicles, and reentry vehicles — reducing dependence on fixed ground range assets. MDA prime contractors Stratolaunch, L3 ARCA, and Raytheon provided letters of support for transitioning the technology onto vehicle platforms once Range Safety qualified.
